Fundamentals week 2: exploring land use history and challenging conceptions

Mosaic landscape in Southern EthiopiaJune 12, 2019

Participants are challenging their conceptions as they learn about power dynamics and narratives that influence land use and conservation. With teachings from Dr. Carol Carpenter, Dr. Alicia Calle and Dr. Bill Laurance, participants learned how the history of land use and degradation is not always straightforward. Some of them were surprised to learn how scientific data, historical records and local knowledge might not always tell the same story. With this in mind, participants started building historical timelines to understand the landscapes in which they work and are setting forth a vision for their conservation and restoration projects.
